Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) is a first person shooter and the direct sequel of the 2007 Game of the Year, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. MW2 is the sixth installment in the Call of Duty series. Players pick up where the story line of Call of Duty 4 took off. MW2 takes place 5 years after Call of Duty 4. The single-player campaign is split between the counterterrorist group, Task Force 141, a group tasked with taking down Ultranationalist Vladmir Makarov, and the US Army Rangers who must defend the US from a Russian invasion.

Features from the first game are employed in MW2. The HUD, which directs players toward objectives and detects enemies has returned. Objectives vary from either arriving at a checkpoint, defending an objective, capturing intel or VIPs, or destroying enemy installations. An all new engine was used in the making of MW2, IW 4.0, which allows the game to hold bigger environments, enhanced graphics, and more efficient rendering. An all new COOP mode is now available to players where they must work together to complete a variety of objectives in a variety of environments found in the single-player campaign. MW2 has received very positive feedback from both critics and players. It has received praise for its campaigns, and multiplayer. When released, MW2 sold 4.7 million copies in the first 24 hours.
