To some of you this may be common knowledge but there are others who haven't yet grasped the effectiveness of those wonderful green donut-like bundles of explosive fun so this post is for the uninformed. Moving on, one of the first things I do when defending on a map with vehicles is play the Engineer kit and equip my AT mines. I initially put them in the most logical spots that a vehicle would pass through just to get started. If you're fortunate enough to play with a squad of friends then you can ask an Assault for ammo and start covering all of those logical spots even more. If you're a random/lone wolf you can just engage the enemy head on, use up your SMG ammo, get killed and return with more mines. Not the best way but randoms can sometimes be stingy with those ammo crates. (You're also sending a message to the enemy that they are going to have to work for this)
Once you feel you've covered the logical paths, think to yourself "Now how would I get a tank past all this?" and go fill up those areas too.( sometimes the enemy are already heading that way ) I'm talking about putting mines directly in front, behind and along side of the Mcoms too. By now you've probably noticed "damage vehicle" "destroy vehicle" "killing an enemy" points appearing or better yet gotten to witness the fruit of your labors first hand. I always giggle when I see the chaos and then go back to putting down more mines. Of course I'm making it sound like you have all the time in the world to do this which isn't the case but do the best you can and shoot those pesky attackers too.
Now one thing that I do which I find particularly fun is when one Mcom is already destroyed and it seems like the enemy is really rolling over your lackluster teammates, I will start to put AT mines in the areas that the opposing team will soon be traveling on. In other words, the roadways and paths leading to the next base. For example, at Isla Innocents I will saunter on over to the roadway that leads to the second set of Mcoms and throw a few mines down there, get some more and do it a little further down the road. I even venture into the restricted zone a bit and chuck some in for good measure. The idea behind this is that they don't expect it and just trundle on through happy as clams and then Whammo! bye bye. It'll usually net two sometimes three kills because they're getting a taxi ride to the next objective. Try it sometime, you'll see.
I know, long winded post but I'm just being thorough. All of what I just wrote applies to boats/watercraft as well. For instance, at Laguna Presa I line as many of the beaches as I can with mines, especially the ones that are far from the objectives because the baddies always try to sneak around on your flank. (mostly, except for the dumb teams) You can also obscure mines by throwing them in the water, in creeks and the shadows from trees on roads and paths.
All of this being said, some experienced teams that work together know enough to clear your precious mines by shooting them and/ or with mortar strikes. Nothing is sadder than when the AT mine Smiley Face
AT Mines Used Offensively.
You may have witnessed attackers putting mines down around Mcoms and then either shooting them or pitching a grenade in to detonate them. This is a good alternative to C4 if you like playing the Engineer kit. I've only used this technique a few times but it can be very effective if you have an Assault with you to reload and blow all 6 mines at once. ( It doesn't destroy the Mcom entirely but significantly weakens it's health.)
When the Defenders also have armored vehicles I try to throw some AT mines down once I've infiltrated their base. It can be a rather unpleasant surprise for the driver who thinks he's (she's) free and clear when the vehicle suddenly erupts in a fireball. They also think that the mines are their own and don't expect the ensuing immolation. (lol)
(This message brought to you by the Anti Tank Mine Association of America, keeping you in the points since March 2010)
Addendum: I thought I'd put some useful information submitted below by fellow members here.
RumGeoff: AT mines work well in Mortar craters too because they're obscured similar to shadows on roads..
HolyGhost: You are allotted only 6 AT mines at any one time. (that I was unaware of but I figured there must be a limit)
Wojo10: AT mines placed on roadways in a triangular pattern with one further up the road to act as a decoy while the other two go unnoticed. larger spread good for catching pesky smaller vehicles as well. You can use the AT mine limit to change your placement if needed. (see Wojo's post for more details and bring some marshmallows to roast) In addition, mines also limit the enemy's movement once they realize they are there. You may not score the points but your efforts contribute to the overall win.
P.S. Anti Tank mines will last until they're destroyed, you're "dashboarded", or you leave the game voluntarily.
Thanks gentlemen, you guys rock.
