Modern Warfare 2 Vs. Bad Company 2 The Truth

Feb 28 2010 07:00 AM | Anubis in General Gaming News -----
A quick trip to the DICE or Infinity Ward forums will have you sifting through hundreds of threads as you read the fanboy war from the armies on both sides on the fence. While there have been fanboy wars before, this one has been particularly heated up partially due to the strong language from DICE representatives who have made it known that they are targeting Modern Warfare 2 and plan to take back the crown for shooters.

While yes, both games are shooters | have teams | objective based games | set to the tone of a modern combat experience - are they that similar? Will one kill the other?

Anyone who doesn't see Modern Warfare 2 as a huge success is kidding themselves. The hype level was definitely there and I believe they delivered on that hype. They promised bigger - badder - more. The single player brought a good story with some very cool scripted moments, however everyone of course knows that its the multiplayer that made it into the behemoth that it is today.

The Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer experience is one that will either leave you smiling from ear to ear or going to bed ready to kill a small child. You tend to either love it or hate it. I still play occasionally when I find time, and I still have that same love hate relationship with it to this day. While I understand that IW wanted to go bigger and badder with the killstreak rewards and tons of pins and awards to unlock - I feel that it was the true gaming experience that suffered as a result of going bigger. Indulge me for just a few minutes.

Killstreak rewards while good in theory have turned every match into a free-for-all match online. The team based game is almost obsolete when you jump online. Objective based games are often nothing more than:A) Campers who sit back and work on their K/D and never go for the objective orB) Running around with Commando and Marathon knifing everyone, but again never going for the objective. Personally I prefer objective games and I could care less about my K/D. It isn't uncommon for me to go 12/32 in a game of domination - does that mean I suck? I don't believe so - We win almost every match and thats what I thought was the point of the game...I go for objectives!

Of course I always find it humorous that there's always someone on the other team who is bragging about going 40/3 and asking why he was put on a #$%@ team. I used to try to explain that they were in the wrong room and that the Team Deathmatch room was a few scrolls up on the menu. I now realize it is useless, so I rarely bother to redirect people where they need to go.

While I believe the vast majority of the Modern Warfare 2 population in the lobbies are idiots that love to hear themselves talk - or people without mics - I do appreciate the fact that we can talk to our entire team. Although most of the time I would rather not talk to the opposing team (The mute option makes life much easier).

And if you are reading this, then I am sure you are aware of how terrible the glitches were with the Javelin, Care Package, Shotgun etc....I won't dwell on these because I realize that EVERY game has issues and unforeseen problems that need to be dealt with. These take time, although I think for IW it took way too long and killed the game more severely for several users.

I think with a few new playlists that for instance took away killstreaks, grenade launcher attachments, heartbeat sensors, perks etc... it would be more appealing to several gamers who would rather play a team game instead of Free-For-All every match. Also I know IW can go and find out who has hacked the game to get 10th Prestige - Ban those @$%#!'sDifferences Between Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Modern Warfare 2

At the time I am writing this - We have only played the demo for Bad Company 2 - So it is impossible to say - Whether this lived up to the hype or not - all we have to go on is what we have seen and what we know.

Maps:Modern Warfare 2 focuses on small confined spaces with lots of action up close and in your face. Maps allow you to shoot through walls, but no destructible environments.Bad Company 2 is much more open and firefights tend to take place over much longer distances. The DICE Frostbite engine allows for destructible environments.

Multiplayer Gameplay:Modern Warfare 2 is much more focused on the skills and killstreaks of a few players. Rewards are given for killstreaks and sitting back. One good player on your team can win a match for you, or atleast make a huge difference. No vehicles and focus is on soldier vs soldier.Bad Company 2 is focused more on team play from all of the soldiers. Soldier classes encourage working together and players are rewarded for helping your team. It is difficult for 1 person to make any difference in a game against average players. Features vehicles which means you have soldier vs soldier and soldier vs vehicle.

Bad Company 2 Is Perfect?

Don't get giddy just yet on Battlefield. It also has several hurdles which can keep users with a bad taste in their mouth.

First Pre-release - I swear, if I log on Tuesday and get in a match with unbearable lag I am going to scream and kill a small child. Seriously, EA is known for sending tweets out saying "Wow, we can't believe we sold this many copies! We are having issues with server overloads and we are trying to sort them out." Why did you print so many discs if you didn't plan on selling them all? Bored? Remember the recent 1943 release anyone? At first it gives something for Battlefield fan boys to gloat over cause they are like, "See - We sold so many that they can't keep up with it. We are awesome!!" Only they wish they were a "WE" with DICE. EA - You know your gonna sell enough copies to buy a small island that is hopefully not swallowed up by the earthquake in Chile - Be PREPARED.

BFBC2 Team Based - Vs Modern Warfare 2 FFA

Yeah I know several of us are excited about the team style gameplay from BF2. The issue lies in the fact that Day #1 I bet you will see 2 retarded children somewhere off in a small corner or wooded area. They are not playing kissing cousins - They will be knifing one another while some medic sits there and loads up on points for reviving them. ITS GONNA HAPPEN. Leaderboards bring out the worst gamers and cheaters in the woodwork. Am I against Leaderboards? No - Do I believe that anyone at the top of the list is legit? No.

Don't even ask about numbnuts waiting on the helipad all day for the chopper - and then firing rockets at your chopper as you fly off. Or the players who think its hilarious to shoot your teammates in the face with the tracer darts.Pins and Awards are nice - I enjoy trying to unlock them I admit. However it sucks when your in a close match and you lose because someone was was trying to get their Rocket Launcher Efficiency Pin.

Squad Chat - Yes its nice to talk to your squad - I just pray I can talk to my team!!! Why on earth would a game that is focused on team play NOT give you the ability to talk to your entire team??? That is STUPID!!

Squad Up - And I hope DICE has sorted out the issues that have come along with matchmaking and sticking with your friends. I hate jumping into a room WITH my friends only to be playing against them. DICE - Your making a cool team game - let us remain a TEAM. At least Modern Warfare 2 has the decency to not even let your friends in the room when it screws up.

Who will win in the match-up between Battlefield Bad Company 2 VS. Modern Warfare 2?

Simple - YOU. Pissing contests between 2 big fighters always leaves the audience and consumer left as the victor. Which is the way it should be. Hopefully Infinity Ward will learn from their mistakes, and possibly see things that Bad Company does right and try to run with it. Hopefully Bad Company takes a few notes from Modern Warfare 2 on what they did right and try and craft it into their game. In the end we the gamers will be left to bicker about who the winner is - DICE and IW don't care - They know we are going to deliver their big fat check to their doorstep every time they mail a new game out the door.

Honestly they are not enough alike to compare. Modern Warfare gives you an experience that you won't find in BF and vice-versa. Don't be a fanboy - Be a gamer and enjoy good games no matter who is behind them.
